Dear fellow FLAs,

We put the spotlight on the ‘sandwiched generation’ this issue. They are likely to form a major part of your workforce and many would be in management/
leadership positions. You may wish to provide a comprehensive menu of flexi-work arrangements and family life resources to support this group of employees.

Getting the Best Out of your Sandwiched Life

Sandwiched between the many care-giving responsibilities for your elderly parents, your children and your spouse? While this is probably not the most ideal position that you would like to have, the good news is that you can make the best out of your situation by learning from the experts.

In this issue, our resident family life education expert, Mr Simon Sim, the former General Manager of TOUCH Community Services, will be giving us some sound advice on how to cope with the stress of being sandwiched.

“An analogy from the emergency announcements on airplanes comes to my mind when I think of stressed out marriages. Grab our own oxygen masks before we assist our children! Protect your own marriage first before you attend to your children and parents!”

The Tripartite Committee on Work-Life Strategy recently published a Work-Life Strategy Handbook for HR practitioners, highlighting the importance of understanding the needs/motivations for employees of different life stages.

In line with the Work-Life Strategy Handbook, two employees from Deutsche Bank shared with us the efforts that underscored the management’s commitment to make the company a better place to work for all.

Many couples today face the competing demands of the workplace and home. This is especially so for couples who find themselves with simultaneous commitments to their ageing parents, work and dependent children. Couples can empower themselves with the skills and knowledge to improve their marital relationship by attending customised talks for sandwiched couples.

Thank you for your continued support. Once again, the quiz in the July issue of Behind Every Success received overwhelming response. We congratulate the three winners below:

a) Lim Sze Yin

b) Sharon Teo

c) Loh Wai Peng

If you didn’t win, don’t despair. We have equally attractive prizes that are up for grabs this issue.
